WBC champion, Tyson Fury, has admitted that he has been in ‘limbo’ as he waits for the official announcement of his historic heavyweight title fight with Oleksandr Usyk.
The bout will be the first heavyweight title fight of its kind since the four-belt era began and will crown an undisputed champion in the division – a feat not achieved since Lennox Lewis in 2000.
It is regarded by many boxing fans to be the must-see fight of 2023, and both Fury and Usyk continue to send public callouts to one another in anticipation of the epic battle.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Tyson Fury revealed that he is currently left in the dark as much as the fans are, and that he is eagerly awaiting an official announcement for the fight to take to place.
“We are just waiting on an announcement really, I’m in limbo like the rest of the world, I just want to fight. I’m not interested in who, what, where or when, I just want to fight. That’s it. If I’m not going to fight, then tell me, so I can just walk away and do something else.”
It appears the monumental clash is set for the Middle East, most likely in Saudi Arabia where Anthony Joshua fought Andy Ruiz for the second time in 2019 and then again for his Usyk rematch in 2022.
The Kingdom also announced that the high-profile fight between Jake Paul and Tommy Fury will be staged in the country in February and that Prince Khalid has employed heavyweight veteran, Derek Chisora, to help promote the fights.
Top Rank Promoter, Bob Arum, pointed out to Sky that the fight would have to wait until after Ramadan (22nd March – 21st April) if it was to be staged in the Middle East – a likely reason behind the delays.
“If the fight goes to the Middle East, it will be sometime after Ramadan, and if the fight is in the UK it will be the beginning of April.”
Both fighters and fans alike are eager for movement as negotiations for the momentous bout drag on.
However, there is a certain aura of optimism surrounding the fight and a general confidence that it won’t collapse in the same way that other proposed heavyweight brawls have done in recent years.
