Frank Warren has made some shrewd signings already during 2024 but now he is hoping to pose a challenge to the super-lightweight titles after confirmation of his latest Queensberry Promotions signing, who makes a surprise move from the United States.
Brandun Lee enter the professional ranks with phenomenal amateur pedigree, boasting a record of 181-9 as well as four Junior Golden Gloves Championships. Lee debuted as a professional aged just 18-years-old in January 2017 and within five years years amassed a record of 24-0 with 22 wins coming by way of knockout.
Since then, Lee has improved to 28-0 but three of those four wins came via unanimous-decision and Lee was knocked down for the first time in his career when he was dropped in round three against Will Madera (17-1-3).
However, his last outing was his greatest victory to date, as the Californian outpointed Mexico’s Pedro Campa (34-2-1) – four months after Campa had been defeated by Teofimo Lopez.
Still, fans are frustrated that Lee has not made the step up to face more recognisable names and the one year spell of inactivity since overcoming Campa has seen the now 25-year-old completely drop out of the super-lightweight rankings.
It is clear that Lee shares this opinion and that he needs to be moved faster if he is to gain momentum in the division and put together a title charge and in an interview with ES News, Lee confirmed that he has joined Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions and that he will be debut for his new promotional outfit on the Joe Joyce vs. Derek Chisora card in London in two months’ time.
“[I just signed with] Queensberry. [I am fighting] July 27th at the O2 Arena.”
Brandun Lee faced Ryan Garcia on five occasions as an amateur and lost each time, but went on to add that he would love the opportunity to face him as a professional and that he would even be willing to take ‘King Ry’ on at either a 143lb catchweight or at 147lbs in order to force the fight.
“Absolutely [I would go to 143lbs to fight Garcia], we could go to 147lbs! We sparred many times, we fought many times.
“The pro’s is a totally different game. He did excellent in his last fight, much love to him, much props. At the end of the day, if we fight then we fight.”
News of Lee’s signature comes just days after the announcement of another outlandish signing in Cuban super-featherweight sensation Jadier Herrera (14-0) as Warren looks to bolster his ranks at 140lbs – where rival and now friend Eddie Hearn currently promotes two of the four world champions in Devin Haney and Subriel Matias.
In December, ESPN ranked Brandun Lee at sixth in their ‘top 25 under 25’ but explained that both activity and competition need to be upped if he is to live up to his early potential and Frank Warren could be the man to take him out of the American spotlight and guide him to world honours.
