A potential fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury remains a hot topic within boxing, and now a legend of the sport has seemingly gone against the grain and made a bold prediction for the bout.
Fury came up short in his bid to become undisputed heavyweight champion last month, suffering a split decision defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, losing his WBC title in the process.
At the same time, Joshua has been in a fine run of form, picking up four straight wins, including knockout wins over Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou in the past six months.
Former undisputed champion Roy Jones Jr has now weighed in on the Joshua vs. Fury debate, offering his opinion on how the mega fight could play out.
While many observers have began to favour Joshua in a potential bout with Fury following the recent performances of both, Jones Jr still feels ‘The Gypsy King’ could come out on top, saying that he doesn’t think ‘AJ’ can keep his British rival down.
“It was always the case [that Joshua could knock Fury out] in that situation but here’s the problem that people don’t realise, yes Fury has been knocked down seven times, but he’s also got back up seven times.
“Even the hardest hitter in the heavyweight division Deontay Wilder knocked him down twice [in the first fight] and he got up both times. So, what makes you think AJ will knock him down and he doesn’t get up? I don’t see that, it could happen, but I don’t see it. I can see him knocking him down, but I don’t know how he keeps him down.”
Fury is set for a rematch against Usyk in December, while Joshua is expected to face Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in September. If both Brits are victorious, they could then finally meet in a huge showdown in 2025.
