Recently crowned three-weight World champion Vasyl Lomachenko (11-1-0, 9 KO’s) has undergone shoulder surgery after revealing that he suffered a torn labrum in the second round of his recent stoppage win over Jorge Linares at Madison Square Garden.
Lomachenko, who has blazed a trail through the sport since turning professional in 2013, had been slated to return in August, however, now faced with a period of rehabilitation, it is unclear as to when the Ukrainian star will be back in action – though he vowed to fans that it would be before the end of the year.
After collecting his third World title in just his twelfth professional contest, ‘Loma’ has once again reaffirmed his status as arguably the best fighter on the planet.
Despite suffering the first knockdown of his career in a ‘Fight of the Year’ candidate with Linares, Lomachenko dragged himself off of the canvas to secure his eighth consecutive stoppage victory.
With boxing fans salivating at the prospect of a mouth-watering unification bout with WBC World lightweight king Mikey Garcia, the injury to Lomachenko has put any such talks on the back-burner. For a man accustomed to fighting week-in-week-out as an amateur, as well as being one of the most active World champions in the sport, Lomachenko will now have to contend with a prolonged absence from the ring.
Maybe he is human after all…
