In a recent interview with Boxing News, Bozy Ennis, trainer and father of boxer Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, claimed that Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s team rejected an offer to face his son. According to Ennis, the offer was declined just a few days ago, although he could not confirm whether Golden Boy Promotions made the decision.
During the interview, the interviewer asked if Jaron Ennis’ team would be interested in fighting Vergil Ortiz Jr. at the super welterweight division. Bozy Ennis’ response was clear: “They already asked about that and they said they turned it down.”
When asked if Golden Boy Promotions made the decision, Bozy Ennis said he wasn’t sure, but emphasized, “We’ll fight him in a heartbeat.”
Boots’ father also clarified that the rejection of the offer happened just a few days ago, hinting that Ortiz Jr.’s team may not be willing to face his son at this time.
Bozy Ennis’ statements quickly prompted a reaction. Oscar De La Hoya, founder of Golden Boy Promotions, responded swiftly on his official X account, categorically denying Ennis’ claims.
“Bullshit 😂😂 we will see who turns it down when the 17’ by 17’ foot ring is in play,” Oscar De La Hoya wrote on X.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. himself intervened in the controversy to clarify the situation.
Through his official X account, Ortiz Jr. expressed his surprise at Bozy Ennis’ statements, stating that it was the first time he had heard of this offer and reaffirmed his willingness to face any high-level opponent.
“First time I’m hearing about this lol I’m always down for a great fight, I didn’t turn anything down!” Ortiz Jr. wrote on X.
Although rumors about a fight between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Jaron Ennis have been circulating, nothing has been confirmed yet.
Ortiz Jr.’s trainer, Robert Garcia, told Boxing Scene that the fight could take place on February 22, during the Riyadh season in Saudi Arabia. If true, the bout could mark Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis’ debut at super welterweight, where he would challenge Vergil Ortiz Jr. for the WBC interim title.
For now, fans will have to wait for an official confirmation while both teams continue their back-and-forth statements.
