Following his return to the ring back in February, Vergil Ortiz Jr. quickly got to work in knocking out Fredrick Lawson and now plans have been revealed for his next fight.
Ortiz was a decorated amateur and seven-time national champion who turned pro and was named 2019 The Ring magazine Prospect of the Year.
He is a power puncher who has won all of his bouts by knockouts and previously held the WBO international welterweight title from 2021 – 2022. Ortiz is trained by Robert Garcia who spoke to 210 Boxing and gave an update on his next fight.
“I think by this coming week everybody should know the news. It’s going to be a big event for him. We also saw the fight with the Eastern European who became WBA champion at 154. I can’t pronounce his name [Israil Madrimov].
“But the WBA, the rules are, if you fight for the vacant titles, the one and two have to do a mandatory defence and Virgil is the mandatory so it looks like after his next fight which is going to be really soon.
“Late summer, Virgil will be fighting for a world title against a champion for a tittle. That’s the WBA wording and what the communications talk about.”
The man he is talking about is Israil Madrimov who stopped Magomed Kurbanov in the fifth round and won the vacant WBA super welterweight title earlier in March.
