We’re one step closer to witnessing Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua touch gloves and fight. With a press conference apparently in the works, the pair could face off in the coming weeks to make their match up official.
Catching up with Intu Boxing about the potential December 3 scrap in Wales, Frank Warren sounded confident – something that’s becoming a regular occurrence.
“I can tell you that the contracts have been sent over and they’ve got them, and we’ll see what happens in the next few days. I’m quietly confident that it will all be worked out. I’m quietly confident that we’ll be having a press conference fairly soon.”
Contracts being prepared and sent was already public knowledge – as is pretty much every step of the negotiations. A potential press conference, however, is good news for fans who are eagerly awaiting final confirmation.
Much has been made of Tyson Fury’s ability to get into the mind of his opponents before they enter the ring. Whether it’s batman costumes or bizarre sauna competitions, ‘The Gypsy King’ is a mind game master.
A press conference would be the first chance to see how he might approach his British rival. ‘AJ’ – almost always cool and calm other than one recent glaring example – may have his work cut out to keep it professional.
If contracts are signed and a press conference takes place, it might convince even the most sceptical of fans to book their tickets to Cardiff before Christmas.
Still, it would be wise to make sure the tickets are refundable. We’ve been close to here before, after all. In early 2021, ‘AJ’ and Fury signed to face each other to crown an undisputed heavyweight champion.
A court ruling courtesy of Deontay Wilder stopped it in its tracks, and in the aftermath Queensbury and Matchroom traded digs through the media. It’s surprising then to see things going so smoothly between teams, but here we are. Warren confirmed as much.
“Tyson wanted it and he wanted to deliver for the fans, and that’s what we really worked hard to do. The other side have shown, as well, a lot of enthusiasm for it, so it should work out.”
It seems to be all happy families in the heavyweight division. Having said that, if the press conference does happen and both teams enter fight mode, expect things to change pretty quickly.
