# WBA orders Morrell vs Ryder for a second time

The WBA has, once again, ordered its ‘Regular’ super-middleweight champion David Morrell to face former title challenger John Ryder.

The Panama-based sanctioning body had previously instructed Cuban talent Morrell to defend the secondary title belt against the Islington southpaw back in January, but the champion squeezed in a voluntary defence against Mexican Mario Cazares. The Minneapolis-based Morrell (5-0, 4 KOs) needed less than a round to blow out Cazares in June.

Now the Tony Sims trained Ryder, who many deemed unfortunate not to pip then-WBA Super champion Callum Smith on the cards in November 2019, finally receives another opportunity.

Matchroom Boxing, representing Ryder (29-5, 16 KOs), and Al Haymon’s PBC, on behalf of Morrell, have until August 7 to agree a deal before the bout heads to purse bids.
