WBC President Makes It Clear Who Is ‘Next In Line’ For Devin Haney

Devin Haney secured one of his best career wins at the weekend and already the WBC has his next fight lined up.

Young American star Haney moved up to super lightweight on Saturday having been undisputed champion in the division below.

His first contest at 140 saw him come up against WBC champion Regis Prograis, and he put on a superb performance, knocking Prograis down and picking up a unanimous 12-round points win with a complete shutout on the cards.

Speaking to Pro Boxing Fans after the fight, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman heaped praise on his new champion.

“He’s a contender for champion of the year. Two great fights in 2023. A dominating performance. I’m very proud of Devin, he’s a great, great fighter. He moved up to super lightweight, knocked [Prograis] down, hurt him a couple of times, this kid is for real.”

He was then asked if he liked a fight between Haney and fellow stars of the division such as Gervonta Davis or Ryan Garcia

“Devin has so many options, Ryan, Gervonta, Teofimo Lopez. We see a great future for him.”

However, Sulaiman then confirmed that first-up is a mandatory, though stopped short of saying it will be called immediately.

“Sandor Matin is the mandatory contender. He accepted the fight to take place so he is next in line. We will address that in the proper time.”

Prograis admitted after the fight that Haney has ‘sneaky power’ and is going to be a handful for anyone in his new division.
