The unified WBO and WBC super welterweight champion, Sebastian Fundora, may face a significant setback in his career. Fundora, who has dominated his division, is at risk of being stripped of one of his world titles. This comes after a decision by the WBO Committee, which could impact his immediate future in boxing.
Initially, an agreement was reached for Fundora to make a voluntary title defense. This agreement included a future unification bout against the WBO interim champion, Terence Crawford. However, if Fundora proceeds with the agreed plan, he risks losing his title, as per the WBO’s ruling.
On October 14, 2024, the WBO issued a resolution outlining the conditions under which Fundora may proceed with a voluntary defense.
The resolution states that Fundora may defend his title against a contender from the WBO’s top 15 world rankings. Nevertheless, he must face Crawford within a maximum of 180 days to unify the titles. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the WBO immediately declaring Fundora’s title vacant, with no chance of appeal.
Fundora finds himself at a crossroads. While the agreement allows for an interim fight before facing Crawford, any failure to meet the established timeline will jeopardize his reign in the super welterweight division. The Committee’s final decision, issued from its Puerto Rico headquarters, emphasizes that this measure is intended to maintain order and competitiveness within the division.
Now, all eyes are on Fundora’s next steps, as he must make strategic decisions to protect his unified champion status and avoid being stripped of one of his most valuable titles.
