After beating Kubrat Pulev at the weekend Dereck Chisora was honest enough to admit he only had a couple of fights left in his career.
The 38-year-old had just gone 12 rounds for the fourth consecutive time and in his DAZN post-fight interview made it clear he only wants big fights and big pay days. Taking on ‘The Bronze Bomber’ Deontay Wilder would tick both boxes.
“I told Eddie if he can get me ‘The Bronze Bomber’ I’ll be happy.”
Chisora’s long time friend and former World Cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew was in his regular analyst slot for DAZN on Saturday night. The concerned Scouser said he would happily see Chisora fight Pulev or Dillian Whyte for a third time but has no interest in seeing Wilder in the opposite corner.
“I don’t want to see that.”
“Listen, I’m going to back him no matter what. But Deontay Wilder is one of the most ferocious punchers the heavyweight division has seen in a long, long time.”
Wilder’s own career is in something of a sabbatical right now since his second defeat to Tyson Fury last year. The former WBC World Heavyweight champion has given mixed signals on whether he will or won’t fight again.
Chisora’s former trainer Dave Coldwell gave his own opinion to Boxing Social’s Ayman Khan and began by looking back on the night his then charge lost to Joseph Parker in their rematch.
“The first thing I said to Dereck after the Parker fight, when we were in the changing rooms, and he was sat on the massage bench, [was] listen to that crowd singing your name. Packed out arena, you’ve just been beaten in a hell of a fight, perfect time to retire. My mind doesn’t change from that.”
“A few days after that fight I saw Eddie Hearn mentioning Wilder and I was like fuck no! Whatever I say now [people will say] ‘Oh, you’re just bitter because you’re not training him now’. No, I was his trainer then I didn’t want him to fight again. I’m not changing my mind.”
“They’re talking about Wilder again. Again, I’ll say the same thing as what I did the first time they mentioned Wilder when I was his trainer, fuck that! The fact that he’s tough means if he doesn’t get slept by one shot straight away, he’s always going to take punishment.”
