British super welterweight champion Troy Williamson claims Josh Kelly wouldn’t be able to live with him if the pair were to ever fight.
The Lonsdale belt holder, promoted by Probellum, has been nominated to defend his title against Kelly by the British Boxing Board of Control. Purse bids are to be submitted by next Wednesday for the Northeast derby.
Williamson visited Newcastle last weekend to take in Kelly’s fight against Lucas Brian Bastida. However, the 30-year-old was not impressed by what he saw and told Probellum.com why in a recent interview.
“I spent most of the fight on my phone, looking up now and again, because it was the same pattern for 10 rounds.”
“I expected better from Josh. But either way, I’m confident I bet Josh Kelly and beat him in good fashion.”
Kelly, whose fights are now broadcast live on Channel 5 under the Wasserman Boxing banner, beat Bastida on points to make it two wins from two since joining his new promotional partner.
During fight week the 28-year-old from Sunderland said the Williamson clash is one he wants.
“I 100% want that fight. That fight is a massive one for the North-East, and I’m game to take it. After I get the win here on Saturday, let’s get it on.”
Williamson won the British 154lbs title nine months ago beating Ted Cheeseman in an action-packed contest which ended with the challenger stopping his opponent in the 10th round.
His first defence was another absorbing bout, this time against Mason Cartwright, which the champion came through over the 12 round distance.
The Darlington fighter is hungry for a second defence and wants it to come against Josh Kelly.
Williamson explained his reasons for believing he would be victorious.
“I’m stronger, fitter and a lot tougher; I would push the pace from round one and I would be surprised if he saw out the 12 rounds with me.”
“I would make him work at a pace he’s uncomfortable with and one he won’t be able to live with.”
“He might be tricky for the first four or five rounds but over a 12-round fight, I’ll get to him in the end.”
