Promoter Frank Warren looks to be putting together a triple-header of title fights on August 28 in Birmingham.
The British Boxing Board of Control monthly circular which was released today (Thursday) provided the news which will see next month’s Queensberry feature the British, Commonwealth and European super-bantamweight title fight between Jason Cunningham and Brad Foster.
Foster, 23, has been the British and Commonwealth champion since 2019 and has beaten the likes of Josh Wale (to win the Lonsdale belt), Ashley Lane, Lucien Reid and James Beech Jr in title defences. Cunningham, 31, and the more experienced of the two, put in one of the domestic performances of the year when he beat Gamal Yafai in May to take the biggest scalp and prize of his career.
In addition to that contest which looks a 50-50 is two more intriguing British title fights. First off Akeem Ennis Brown will defend his super-lightweight belt against Sam Maxwell and Anthony Cacace is slated to take on Lyon Woodstock in the first defence of his British super-featherweight crown.
Ennis-Brown, unbeaten in 14 fights, has been out of action since September 2 when he beat Philip Bowes on points to win the vacant Lonsdale strap and take the Commonwealth championship in the process. The pair had been scheduled to meet in March, but Brown had to withdraw due to injury. Maxwell instead faced Ben Fields and won on points over eight rounds to move to (15-0, 11 KOs).
There appears to be no love lost between Cacace and Woodstock and fingers crossed the pair finally get it on in just over six weeks. The champion beat Sam Bowen to win the British title in November 2019 and hasn’t been in a boxing ring since. The Northern Irishman suffered some horrific dental issues which has contributed significantly to his lay-off. Woodstock too hasn’t fought since 2019 when he lost to Zelfa Barrett. The pair were set to sort out their rivalry in February, but Woodstock withdrew after failing a Covid-19 test.
Elsewhere on the BBBofC circular the vacant British super-flyweight title has two suitors in the shape of Quaise Khademi and Ijaz Ahmed. That fight is scheduled to take place on a Frank Warren show on a date still to be announced.
And finally Tommy Frank and Kyle Yousaf will square off for the vacant British flyweight championship on August 27 in Sheffield. Dennis Hobson promotes and will be broadcast live on FightZone.
