David Benavidez spoke about Gilberto Ramirez’s punching power after the fight and gave a clear answer. The fight took place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo weekend on May 2.
Before the fight, there were many unknowns for Benavidez as he moved up by 25 pounds to face Ramirez, and many predicted that ‘Zurdo’ would overwhelm him with his power, having been used to cruiserweight.
However, Benavidez put on a dominant performance; he moved as fast as a light heavyweight for a cruiserweight, kept the pace, and his power also translated in the new division. ‘Zurdo’ still managed to land some great shots that concerned Mike Tyson a bit.
Following the victory, Benavidez spoke to Fight Hub TV backstage. He was asked about remarks from Mike Tyson, who reportedly felt he was taking unnecessary shots and wanted him to avoid getting hit.
However, Benavidez made it clear that he never felt in danger inside the ring and asserted that he never felt the power in the punches Ramirez was able to land.
“At the end of the day, I was there because I didn’t really feel nothing,” Benavidez said. “I didn’t feel no power. I felt like I took every punch pretty well.”
Despite Ramirez’s reputation as a durable and experienced fighter, Benavidez showed no signs of being troubled. Instead, he maintained control and dictated the pace from early in the contest.
His ability to absorb shots without slowing down allowed him to stay aggressive and execute his game plan effectively.
Benavidez eyes major fights as Canelo Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol options emerge
‘The Monster’ broke down Ramirez with each round and made ‘Zurdo’ take a knee in the fourth round. He landed great hooks in the sixth round that inflicted damage on the 34-year-old, and his eye was swollen shut. He took a knee, the referee started the countdown, but he gave up before the 10 count and lost via knockout.
With the victory, Benavidez captured the WBO and WBA cruiserweight titles and became the first to hold belts in 168, 175, and 200 pounds.
Following the win, he wasted no time calling out Canelo Alvarez, who was present at the venue to support his friend Jaime Munguia, who fought against Armando Resendiz and dethroned him to win the WBA super middleweight title on the undercard.
Meanwhile, it is reported that Alvarez is set to make his much-anticipated return to the ring against Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight belt. The fight is reported to take place in September in Riyadh.
Additionally, the newly crowned champion has also asserted that he is open to facing Dmitry Bivol. With the win, many opportunities have opened up for ‘The Monster’; it remains to be seen what his next move will be.
