David Benavidez justified his moniker “The Monster” with a dominant performance against Gilberto Ramirez on May 2 in their title fight. Following the knockout loss, Ramirez was taken out on a stretcher for medical evaluation. This has now raised immediate concern after a brutal finish inside the ring.
Benavidez delivered a dominant performance during their cruiserweight clash on Cinco de Mayo weekend at T-Mobile Arena. The bout ended in emphatic fashion, with Ramirez unable to continue after absorbing significant damage.
‘The Monster’ controlled the fight and steadily broke Ramirez down with pressure and clean power shots. As the contest progressed, the damage became apparent, and Ramirez struggled to respond effectively. ‘Zurdo’ got knocked down at the end of the fourth round.
Eventually, in the sixth round, Benavidez landed a series of sharp hooks that forced Ramirez to take a knee. His right eye was visibly swollen shut. Although the referee began the count, he failed to get back to his feet, resulting in a knockout loss.
Immediately after the fight, medical staff stepped in to assess Ramirez’s condition, as the severity of the stoppage raised concerns. However, he did walk out of the ring on his own.
Following the bout, the ‘Source of Boxing’ shared footage on their X account, showing Ramirez being carried out on a stretcher for further medical evaluation.

In boxing, such measures are often taken as a precaution after heavy knockouts to ensure fighter safety. Ringside doctors typically monitor symptoms closely before clearing athletes.
As of writing, no official update has been provided regarding the extent of any injuries.
While attention shifted to Ramirez’s condition, Benavidez’s performance continued to draw widespread praise. He stepped up in weight for the fight and delivered one of the most dominant displays of his career.
The victory allowed him to capture the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles. He etched his name in boxing history as he became the first boxer to capture titles at 168, 175, and now 200 pounds.
Benavidez calls out Canelo Alvarez after stopping Ramirez
Following the win, the newly crowned cruiserweight champion called out Canelo Alvarez, who was at the event to support his friend Jaime Munguia, who fought on the undercard.
“I just want to give the fans what they want to see.I’ve seen Canelo in the building.”
He then turned to the crowd and asked if they wanted the fight, drawing a loud reaction from the arena and amplifying the callout.
“Hey, let me just ask the fans this. Do you guys want to see Canelo versus David Benavidez? [Crowd erupts]. Enough said. That means that we can’t leave that fight on the table.” Benavidez said
The new cruiserweight champion emphasized that he respects Alvarez and expressed his desire to face him in the ring.
“You know what I mean? Whatever, I have respect for Canelo. He’s a great champion, but I’m a great champion too. Let’s do it.”
