Jaime Munguia put on a spectacular performance to dethrone Armando Resendiz to become the new WBA super middleweight champion.
Munguia took on Resendiz in the co-main event headlined by Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez vs. David Benavidez on May 2 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Munguia made a fast start in Round 1, landing a sharp left hook that caught Resendiz early. Although the champion responded with a brief combination, Munguia continued to find success with his lead right hand and finished the round with a flurry near the ropes. In Round 2, both fighters traded jabs in the center. Still, Munguia stepped it up with a multi-punch combination that had Resendiz momentarily shaken, while also showing improved footwork and defense.
In Round 3, Resendiz had a better moment as he connected with a solid hook, but Munguia quickly answered with a strong flurry and more left hooks. By Round 4, Resendiz struggled to find his range, while Munguia settled into rhythm, mixing body shots with straight punches. In Round 5, Munguia fully took control, dictating the pace as Resendiz looked hesitant, with Munguia landing clean counters to both the head and body while maintaining composure.

Munguia continued to assert control in rounds 6 and 7, landing a looping right hand before dominating exchanges in the center of the ring. He mixed his attack effectively, connecting with body shots, uppercuts, and sharp counters on the inside, clearly outworking Resendiz and landing the cleaner punches throughout the round.
Munguia’s power began to show its effect as he continued to press forward with confidence in round 8. Meanwhile, Resendiz pushed him against the ropes and briefly found success, but Munguia quickly reversed the position and regained control.
After the bell rang, Resendiz’s corner urged him on, warning that he was falling behind despite the fight being close.
In Round 9, Munguia stepped up the pressure and landed brutal power shots to the champion’s face. Then in Round 10, his corner advised him to stay composed, use long-distance jabs, and stick to what had worked throughout the fight. Moving into Round 11, the 29-year-old dominated the championship rounds by unloading combinations, including sharp right and left hands.
Finally, in Round 12, Resendiz entered knowing he needed a knockout. However, Munguia stayed aggressive, landing clean shots even while backed against the ropes, briefly wobbling the champion. As the final seconds ticked down, Munguia pushed for a finish, while Resendiz made a last effort to land something decisive. Still, Munguia avoided the danger and closed the fight in control.
