“Very tough opponent”: Ilia Topuria appears worried about 1 thing ahead of Justin Gaethje fight

It’s less than five weeks to the historic UFC Freedom 250 events on June 14 at the White House grounds. Conversations are heightening concerning the events, especially after the UFC’s White House press briefing. All four main fighters for the showdown were in attendance as UFC representatives visited President Trump at the Oval Office. For many UFC fans, the fight between Topuria and Gaethje, whom Trump described as his “friend”, is potentially one for the record books.

The Georgian-Spanish fighter has himself weighed into the conversation, describing Gaethje in superlative and sportsmanly terms. During a recent interview, Topuria highlighted Gaethje’s strengths while identifying one thing that allegedly worries him ahead of the combat.

Following Khamzat Chimaev’s loss to Sean Strickland last weekend, Topuria is now the only undefeated champion left in the UFC. His stance alone is enough to scare off any potential foe, including Gaethje. Like Chimaev, Topuria risks his title and undefeated record against Gaethje in what promises to be a historic night.

But Ilia Topuria stubbornly has his eyes set on upsetting Gaethje, whom he openly respects. And one thing he’s really worried about is that the 37-year-old’s a tough opponent.

“I take Justin very seriously. I’m working my ass off, I’m working really hard because I know I have a very tough opponent in front of me.””

Topuria made the comments during a recent interview, during which he described Gaethje as a legendary fighter and hall of famer. He also admitted to watching all Gaethje’s fights, while highlighting the potential threat Gaethje’s experience poses. While Topuria is unbeaten in 17 professional bouts, Gaethje has a remarkable 27-5-0 record that’s similarly intimidating.

Besides Gaethje’s certified legendary status in the game, Topuria sees no need to worry about his potential June 14 fight. Putting down the interviewer’s “overconfidence” concern, Topuria points to his intense preparations as proof that he reveres the tie. Of course, he does need to revere a fighting bout that will mark America’s 250th anniversary in front of military personnel at the White House South Lawn.
