WBC world champion Tyson Fury is probably the consensus number one heavyweight in the world at the minute, with a case also to be made for Oleksandr Usyk.
As long as there has been no undisputed fight between the two elite operators, there will always be some sort of debate as to who the top dog in the division is.
In a recent interview with Boxing Social, American contender Michael Hunter stated he felt he was the best fighter north of 200lbs and that he has what it takes to beat the likes of Fury and Deontay Wilder.
“I feel like I’m the best.
Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder are the top names, these are big names and people would want to see it. I think the way I fight with my ring IQ is enough to beat those guys.
I can compete with the best for sure and I believe I beat them all, I just haven’t got the opportunity to show it.
I’ve been highly ranked and close to mandatory positions before, I just haven’t been able to capitalise on it.”
Hunter has always been regarded as a talent, however inactivity and promotional issues have stunted his career in the past few years.
He returns to the ring for the first time in 18 months at the end of June against former Joe Joyce opponent Donnie Palmer, in what he will hope kickstarts an ascent towards one of the big names in the division.
With an undisputed clash between Fury and Usyk seemingly likely to take place this December, Hunter will be keen to put himself in a position to strike should some of the four major titles become vacant.
