Amir Khan hoped Saul Alvarez received a longer ban – “Six months is not going to do anything, it’s barely one fight”

Amir Khan returns to the ring this weekend, he and his upcoming opponent, Phil Lo Greco faced the media for the final time before they face-off on Saturday.

‘King Khan’ touched on a number of topics and the big news coming out of American Boxing, was that the Nevada State Athletic Commission decided to impose a six-month ban.

Many have raised an eyebrow at the punishment. Many perceive this as working out well for Canelo because he is in line to return on another Mexican holiday in September where he will most likely rake in mammoth amounts of money.

Furthermore, he is most likely to encounter an already ageing Golovkin who will be another six months older.

Additionally, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was banned for nine months for testing positive for Marijuana. On the other hand, the Mexican PPV attraction has been handed a lesser punishment for intentionally trying to jack up his physique. It is quite an unusual situation.

Khan believes an example should have been made of the Mexican to deter future offenders from intentionally cheating.

‘The six-month suspension doesn’t mean anything because other fighters will see that and think ‘I can take anything to get jacked up and only have a six-month ban’.

“I hoped it would be more serious, a longer ban, to make sure that others fighters won’t follow. Life bans or at least a couple of years so that you feel it.”

“Six months is not going to do anything, it’s barely one fight, he’ll be straight back into a massive fight again.”

“It is only going to push young fighters toward taking stuff because of the short ban.”

“When you get caught you will always be known as a cheat and you will never get that same respect.

“Once you are caught you are a cheat and will never respect any fighter.”

“We don’t know if he has been doing it all his career, you can never respect the same person.”

Khan went on to add that he would never consider trying to enhance his abilities illegally with PEDs and that now Canelo’s image will be tarnished and he will be labelled a cheat.

“I have been fighting for more than 10 years and I have never thought about taking anything.”

“Why should we allow others to do it and keep that respect?”

“I am a clean fighter, I can always have my head up high, but others out there will know they have cheated deep down.

People will always remember Canelo as a cheat;” Khan concluded.
