British legend Amir Khan has revealed who he believes is the number one pound for pound fighter in boxing – and his answer may not come as too much of a surprise.
Khan trained with former opponent Terence Crawford and coach Brian McIntyre for his farewell bout against Kell Brook last year, in which he was stopped in six rounds.
And in a recent interview with SecondsOut, the Bolton man explained that Crawford’s recent victory over Errol Spence had cemented his place as the world’s number one boxer.
“Crawford! The way he beat Spence, in a fight that no one ever expected he would do it that easily. The way he went into the ring and put on a great performance – he was punch perfect.
He was the powerful fighter in there, he had more speed and he looked physically stronger. He just ticked all the boxes for me.
With that win against Spence, you have to say that Crawford is pound for pound number one.”
So impressive was Crawford against Spence, that boxing fans have begun hypothesising about him jumping up three full weight classes for a shot at undisputed super middleweight world champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, with ‘Bud’ himself even being open to the idea.
However, that and any other potential opponents Crawford has his eye on will have to wait, after news emerged over the past week that Spence has decided to trigger a contractual rematch clause and the pair will lock horns once again.
Though no details on the rematch have emerged as of yet, it is expected to take place towards the back end of this year or early next and will likely be up in weight at 154lbs.
