Amir Khan has shared his take on Floyd Mayweather possibly making his mixed martial arts debut this year against Conor McGregor inside a UFC cage.
Floyd has posted various teasers and hints on social media with him being inside an actual cage and photoshopped images as well with him wearing MMA gloves and landing an elbow shot on a bloody McGregor.
The back and forth between Mayweather and McGregor on social media has caught a lot of attention in both boxing and MMA.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Khan spoke about Mayweather’s videos and the tough task that lies ahead of ‘Money’ should he actually do it.
‘King’ Khan, an MMA promoter himself, believes that despite Mayweather’s videos and photos the former world champion is not serious about getting in the cage.
“I don’t think [Mayweather] will ever step in the cage. MMA is a very difficult sport, you need to have a lot of strength and takedowns and I just don’t think a boxer is just gonna have all the tools to fight someone in an MMA cage, it’s gonna be really difficult,” Khan told to Sky Sports.
The Bolton boxer simply does not see it happening.
“I’ve been seeing Mayweather talking about and taking a lot of videos and pictures inside the MMA cage, but I just can’t see that ever happening. I can’t see him ever stepping in with someone in the MMA cage,” added Khan.
Many are truly skeptical regarding the rumours but one person close to McGregor, his coach John Kavanagh, says there is something ‘forming’ behind the scenes.
“I’m kind of reminded of early last year when I was asked about the boxing fight.
“And I was doubtful as anybody, and I actually went as far as to stupidly tweet that I’ll do the Irish river dance naked if Floyd steps in the Octagon.
“Now, I’m going to be honest, I’m practicing Irish dancing, and I’m getting nervous about that.
“In all seriousness, it’s a crazy world we live in. The fight that could never happen happened.
“And now this is a fight that can never happen, and it seems to be getting.. I don’t know, there seems to be something forming there. I would absolutely love it.”
“I know that probably comes across a certain way, but I can only say what I’m thinking, I can only say what I feel if that was to happen, it’s not the type of fight that Conor’s gonna have to do a real specific 12 weeks for, and then take three or four months off afterwards, and completely get ready for another one.
“You could kind of do that one and fit it in on the night of his real fight.”
