Amir Khan has revealed a fight that could tempt him out of retirement – and it’s unsurprisingly the one he just missed out on in his early career.
Khan told Intu Boxing that, whilst he is enjoying retirement and plans to have more time off, the prospect of an exhibition bout with the legendary Floyd Mayweather would more than likely reignite his passion for the sport
“I’ve always said since my last fight I want to take a full twelve months off. I don’t think I have that hunger in me, but maybe in a year’s time that might come back.”
“If it’s a massive name, like a Floyd Mayweather, then the hunger will definitely come back.”
Khan and Mayweather were once very close to a fight in the professional game but, with the contracts signed, the American pulled the plug at the last minute – because Khan announced the fight before him. Mayweather was the pound-for-pound king at the time, whilst Khan was considered one of the best welterweights in the world, and has since said in recent interviews that the fight not happening is amongst the biggest regrets of his career.
Khan called time on a glittering career earlier this year following his stoppage defeat to long term rival Kell Brook in Manchester. The move was welcomed by the British boxing public, with the Bolton man visibly not the same fighter he once was.
As for Mayweather, he’s fighting YouTuber Deji this weekend at the Coca Cola Arena in Dubai. The exhibition will be available via DAZN’s pay-per-view service.
