Former super-lightweight world champion, Amir Khan, has suggested a potential cause that may have led to him to failing a drugs test around the time of his clash with Kell Brook.
Khan was knocked out by British rival Brook in the sixth round of their long-awaited contest in February of last year. Almost fourteen months later, Khan was handed a two-year ban from all sport, despite already being retired, after the revelation that Ostarine was found in his system in a post-fight test.
Ever since, Khan has maintained his innocence and his case of it being not intentional was accepted by an independent panel.
Now, in an interview with Boxing News, the Bolton fan-favourite has offered an explanation as to what could have led to the ingestion of the performance enhancing drug.
“It could have been from drinking from someone’s drink. A lot of my friends are on steroids, because they want to be big. The new thing is that everyone wants to be on steroids. I might have shared a drink with someone. But I’ve never cheated in boxing.”
“I’m the one who said that I wanted drug testing. Can you believe that? Everything, I put in the book, because I know I’ve never been a cheater. Look at the performance I had [Khan was stopped in the sixth] I had nothing left. I was a flat fighter in that fight. I didn’t want to be there. If I knew I was on something I’d have psyched myself up. “I’m on this, and I’m gonna be stronger”.”
Khan’s ban will come to an end in early 2024, with it being backdated to the fight date.
