Former WBA & IBF Super-Lightweight Champion, Amir Khan, has changed his mind on the much-speculated clash between super-middleweight king Canelo Alvarez and welterweight champion, Terence Crawford.
It now seems a real possibility that two of the biggest stars in boxing will meet, provided Canelo defeats Jermell Charlo this month, after Crawford revealed his intentions of jumping up three weight-divisions to fight the Mexican and potentially become a three-division undisputed champion.
Khan is the only man to have faced both Canelo and Crawford in the ring, losing via sixth-round stoppage on both occasions. The Brit originally advised Crawford to swerve the fight, believing that Canelo was simply too big for ‘Bud’ and that weight-classes are there for a reason.
“I don’t think that should happen. Look, I like Crawford [but] I think Canelo is a beast at that weight, honestly. I would advise Crawford not to do that.”
Howver, now it appears that the Brit has had a change of heart, telling social media that he feels Crawford can win the fight, in a clip captured by ES News.
“Canelo-Crawford? I think that Crawford could beat him, because Crawford is a big, big 147lber and he is strong as well, which I think that a lot of people don’t give him enough credit for. I think that fight, if it does happen, as long as Crawford stays away and just boxes and is smart, he can win that fight.”
Whilst Canelo must defeat Charlo for talks to get underway, it appears that Errol Spence Jr has provided another stumbling block for the bout, after activating his rematch clause with Crawford. Therefore, we can expect that if Canelo/Charlo-Crawford does take place, it will likely be in the second half of 2024.
