Generational great Andre Ward has been mulling over what might have happened had British super middleweight legends Carl Froch and Joe Calzaghe ever have fought.
There has often been back and forth between Froch and Calzaghe about exactly why they didn’t fight. For a small window, it was a possibility when Froch was on the way up and Calzaghe was already a well-proven and unbeaten world champion.
Calzaghe then moved up to light heavyweight to continue his dominance towards the end of his career, earning wins over Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.
Fellow unbeaten former world champion Ward followed a similar path – he also competed at super middleweight and beat Froch in the Super Six tournament before moving up to light heavyweight himself and twice beating the then fearsome Russian Sergey Kovalev.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Ward gave his views on what would have happened in the all-British fantasy fight.
“I don’t think Froch could have kept up with the pace. Calzaghe had good footwork. That’s kryptonite to Carl Froch, he doesn’t have great feet at all.
“I’m not going to say Calzaghe would have blown Froch out cause Froch had the desire, the unwillingness to give up, we saw that with Jermaine Taylor when he kept coming and eventually knocked the door down. He’s going to have that in a fight with Joe Calzaghe.”
Ward then gave credit to Froch for his desire to win but restated that he thinks he would have lost on points, as does Calzaghe’s former promoter Frank Warren.
“I think it would have been a competitive fight but I think Joe’s activeness and punch count would ultimately bewilder Carl Froch even though he’d never yield or give up and he’d have ultimately beaten him on a points victory.”
Stand by for a quick and no doubt sharp retort from ‘The Cobra.’
