Former two-weight world champion, Andre Ward, has weighed in on the upcoming super fight between Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis.
The young American stars will come face to face on April 22 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In something out of the norm for boxing, two unbeaten fighters will put it all on the line and, in their words, to become ‘the face of boxing’.
Ward, who now works as a boxing analyst after an undefeated pro campaign, agrees with the general consensus that Davis is the favourite in the bout, but believes that it’s far from an easy nights work for the 28 year-old.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Ward said:
“You’ve got to favour Tank in that, it’s not a gimmie fight for either guy but you’ve got to favour ‘Tank’ based on the experience and the better opposition and the punching power of Tank and his boxing ability.
But Ryan is explosive, extremely fast and Tank is going to have to content with that and that’s going to give Tank some trouble early until he catches up.”
Ward thinks the outcome might come down to one question for Garcia.
“The question for Ryan Garcia is can he take a punch?
When Gervonta lands can he take that, keep his composure and keep trying to execute his game plan – if he does that then he’s got a shot.
It’s not going to be easy for either guy and I don’t think that fight goes the distance no matter which way you swing it.”
Fans are hoping that the clash can act as a catalyst for more big fight to be made in the sport.
The action can be viewed on both Showtime and DAZN pay-per-view in the US and UK fans can watch as part of their monthly subscription.
