Any doubts about Andre Ward position as the clear number one light heavyweight boxer in the world can be put to rest. But not without a bit of controversy.
The rematch against Sergey Kovalev proved out to be yet again a very even fight between the two. In the eight round Ward hurt the Russian with a solid right hand and then finished the with fight body shots. Kovalev complained that Ward was hitting below the belt on many occasion.
The first rounds were back and forth with both fighters scoring points but it was Ward who was landing the bigger shots. Kovalev attacked the body a lot in hopes of slowing Ward down but American never took his foot off the gas. The Russian had trouble dealing with Ward’s movement and good reflexes. Kovalev tried his best to convince the referee that Ward was landing low but referee Weeks ignore the Russian’s complaints.
Ward now has 32 professional wins and a perfect zero losses. He successfully retained his WBO, WBA, and IBF belts. This weekend’s win was his 16h stoppage win. Kovalev has now lost two in a row for the first time in his career.
