The unified WBA, IBF and IBO world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua (20-0 20 KO) overcame many pitfalls and much hardship in order to make his dream of becoming a champion a reality.
He came from a troubled background and he eventually became involved with certain criminal activities that landed him into problems with the police.
But, ‘AJ’s story reads as a real rag to riches story as he was able to put that behind him, turn his life around and claim a Gold Medal at London 2012 and then go on to stamp his mark on the professional rankings of the heavyweight division.
In an interview with Channel 4, Joshua with much experience of how it is for youths in Britain shared what he would say to a young lad contemplating a similar path to what he endured before he found boxing. Additionally, Joshua also addressed the ongoing topic of knife crime in the U.K.
“It is interesting because you know the epidemic that we are facing needs to be addressed.”
“It is one of the main subjects we need to address in London.
“This is crazy and it is getting out of hand, well it isn’t getting, it is out of hand!”
“There are innocent people that are not even caught up with criminal activity getting involved in these situations. Also, it is a situation where people don’t realise the effect this has on families.”
“Let’s say me and yourself (interviewee) have an issue and get into an altercation. Something detrimental happens where I lose my life or you lose your life.”
“We look at it as just me and you, (but) what we don’t see is that you might have a son, a daughter, a wife, a mother, a father, a cousin, a brother who depend on me. We lose that touch because we are so small minded and we only see it as me and you,” Joshua added.
“I wish that people kind of let these issues go.”
“People need to think of the bigger picture when they are getting into these situations,” Joshua shared.
