Anthony Joshua is already riding high off the back of his latest victory and has now been given a boost with regards to his chances of fighting the winner of the Tyson Fury versus Oleksandr Usyk undisputed fight.
Joshua and his team have done a superb job of changing his fortunes around following two hard-to-take and back-to-back losses to Usyk in 2021 and 2022 that left the former two-time world heavyweight champion without any belts and out in the cold.
Since then he has had four fights in the last 11 months, including first a points win over American Jermaine Franklin, then a knockout win over Robert Helenius.
A stoppage against Otto Wallin followed in December when the Swede retired on his stool between rounds and most recently a crushing knockout victory over Francis Ngannou in the second round of their fight in Saudi Arabia this past weekend.
Now that looks a little more likely to happen because of what WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has told Sky Sports.
“The WBC was presented a sanction request which was to fight for the undisputed. The WBC accepted that sanctioning and we accepted the rematch they have requested. But, if it is not anything to do with contractual or promotion, we would absolutely accept the winner to fight Joshua.
“The WBC has been very much attentive to this matter. So we have completely freed the ground for the undisputed, for a rematch, and for another fight of that level. The WBC position right now is very open to support the undisputed champion taking on the fights that the fans want to see.”
It looks more likely than ever that Fury and Joshua will finally be able to get it on should ‘The Gypsy King’ come through this tough night in May.
