Renowned boxing trainer and analyst Teddy Atlas has given his views on a potential super fight between Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis.
On the latest episode of his podcast ‘The Fight’, Atlas started by saying Ryan Garcia’s natural size gives him the edge over his Lightweight rivals:
“He knows he has an edge on him [Gervonta Davis] at 140 and I’ll tell you why – he’s got a bigger skeleton and he’s only 23 years old he’s still filling out and it shows.”
“Tank’s young too but he don’t have that skeleton to fill out the way that Garcia does.”
“He [Garcia] might wind up at the end of his career at 147.”
The ex-trainer believes Garcia permanently moving to Junior Welterweight is a smart move considering the amount of talent in the division he’s leaving behind:
“With that skeleton at 23 years of age he’s going to have an edge on these lightweights and he’s going to he’s going to vacate that weight class – which I think is smart because the best competition, the best fighters, are at lightweight not junior welterweight”
The fiery analyst didn’t hold back when talking about Oscar De La Hoya and the chances that we get to see these big fights:
“I’ll tell you another thing – I don’t expect to see any of these fights because De La Hoya already lost Canelo and all he’s got is this guy [Garcia]”
“I mean he’s hanging on by a string – that’s all he’s got.”
“He’s not gonna risk his golden goose, his new golden goose, he’s not risking him, he’s gonna make money fighting guys that are mirages – guys like Fortuna.”
“Again you’re [De La Hoya] trying to get back – which is kind of embarrassing.”
He rounded-off the podcast with further praise for Garcia’s performance last Saturday:
“Ryan Garcia is very talented, he’s very talented – he had the right guy in front of him to show his wares and to really show off.”
