David Benavidez’s promoter Sampson Lewkowicz has slammed the legacy of Canelo Alvarez and detailed why a fight between the undisputed super-middleweight champion and ‘The Mexican Monster’ will not take place this year.
When 2024 got underway, Canelo-Benavidez was at the summit of many people’s wish lists for this year, expecting that the now overdue clash would take place in either May or September.
However, it seems Canelo is opting to take an alternate route and will not face the imposing KO artist. Speaking to Pro Box TV, Lewkowicz claims a contract is already in place for a Canelo and Jermall Charlo fight, following the former’s win over Jermell Charlo.
“No. it’s not going to happen for several reasons. One of them of course is that sometimes people say that the reason why Benavidez wants the fight is to cash the cheque.
“He agreed with the first proposal that Eddy Reynoso said, then there was nothing, but later it was confirmed that this was the proposal, it was totally legal and authorized by Showtime and Stephen Espinoza.
“We agreed that David Benavidez wasn’t going to earn more than five million dollars, which is what he earns in almost any fight. That shows that Benavidez gave Canelo all of the rest financially for the opportunity to show who’s best.”
Lewkowicz went on to attack the legacy of Canelo.
“Unfortunately they decided to fight with the first Charlo [Jermell], then there’s a contract for the second [Jermall] Charlo, that was changed from one side to the other.
“I’m not aware of it because I didn’t do those negotiations. I know positively that they were the two talks from the first moment that was signed, but the third was supposedly from Benavidez.
“Canelo Alvarez’s legacy will be stained because he didn’t fight with the best at this moment, which is Benavidez.”
Canelo has announced that he will face an American on May 4th, but Charlo has declared that talks have not taken place yet.
