WBC super-featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt believes his eagerly anticipated clash with compatriot Oscar Valdez will live up to its high expectations.
The duo are set to meet on February 20 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and the heavy-handed Berchelt is promising to rigorously test the jaw of Valdez (28-0, 22 KOs), which was broken in a WBO featherweight title defence against Scott Quigg in March 2018.
This battle of two Mexican punchers seems unlikely to disappoint with Berchelt now recovered from a recent bout with Covid-19.
“There are two Mexicans in the ring, which means the show is guaranteed. Everyone knows my explosive style. If I can hurt Oscar and I can put a good hand on him, I will look for the knockout,” Berchelt (38-1, 34 KOs) told EFE.
“I have the advantage that I am at my natural weight, he is coming up [from 126lbs] and his jaw is damaged. That is a point in my favour. I will go to put my finger on the sore, to finish it off with his jaw.
“I would like to break the record of Julio César Chávez with nine defences at super-featherweight and, if not, I’ll go to lightweight against Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney, or someone else. It would be a question of us talking about the purse.”
