The collapse of Canelo Alvarez’s undisputed super-middleweight title fight against Caleb Plant hasn’t left the Mexican star with a shortage of options.
WBC and IBF light-heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev, considered to be the best 175-pounder on the planet, has now stated his eagerness to step in to face Canelo just like fellow Russian and WBA Super champion Dmitry Bivol.
The unbeaten Beterbiev and Bivol would both seem to represent much stiffer challenges for Canelo than American Plant as the Mexican pound-for-pound No.1 seeks a marquee name for his final fight of 2021.
Should Canelo’s team come calling, the heavy-handed Beterbiev would have no problem saying yes.
“It would not be difficult for his representatives to come to an agreement with me,” Beterbiev told Match TV.
“I have a desire to win a new title [at light-heavyweight]. For me it is more interesting than money. If [Canelo’s team] contact me, I will give them a positive answer.
“I want to become an undisputed champion or try my hand at a fight with Canelo.”
Four-division champion Canelo previously stepped up to light-heavyweight to stop another Russian Sergey Kovalev (WKO11) in November 2019.
