Legendary promoter Bob Arum has claimed that one special fighter is unstoppable.
Arum knows a thing or two about elite boxers having been a promoter for the last 50-plus years. He has put on fights with all-time greats like Marvin Hagler, Roberto DurĂ¡n, Thomas Hearns and of course Muhammad Ali.
He remains a towering figure in the sport who currently promotes, amongst others, Shakur Stevenson who has held multiple world championships in three weight classes from featherweight to lightweight. The most recent of which he picked up with a scrappy win against Edwin De Los Santos – Stevenson subsequently apologised for his sub-par performance which had the crowd booing at times. The 12-round fight ended in a unanimous decision in Las Vegas following a ringwalk that saw him flanked by fellow fighting greats, Andre Ward and Terence Crawford.
Speaking to Fight Hype before the fight, he was asked about Gervonta Davis’s chances against Stevenson.
“I can’t see anybody beating Shakur, because he’s so good. Not even Devin Haney. I think Shakur is really special.”
A discussion of weight classes then ensued and saw Arum claim Haney, with whom Shakur has had plenty of back and forth, might not be able to go back down having recently moved up to 140 lbs.
“I don’t think Haney can go back and be as good as he was at 135. It looks to me like he has trouble at 135 and that he’s gunna stay at 140. But if he comes back to 135 we would certainly be open to putting him with Shakur.”
It was then suggested that 26-year-old Shakur might be able to move up to 140 lbs.
“One step at a time, there is no rush. He’s a baby.”
