Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis could be one of the biggest fights in the sport, and rumours that the two will go toe-to-toe this year have the boxing world excited.
However, Top Rank CEO and veteran promoter, Bob Arum, believes fans will be disappointed, as he can’t see the two Americans facing each other, at least for now. His reasoning being that both fighters are huge assets and stars of their respective promotions. He believes neither Golden Boy Promotions (Garcia) nor Mayweather Promotions (Tank) will allow their poster boys to take a 50/50 fight, as it would cause collateral damage to the companies.
Speaking to FightHype.com, 90-year-old Arum explained.
“It would be a good fight, but I don’t see that fight happening, that’s the truth. I just don’t see it happening.
Each guy is valuable to his company and it’s very hard to get a company to take a risky fight unless the reward is really big, and I don’t see the reward at this point being that big.
Look at Floyd’s career, he was very content to take easier fights and build to a major fight, where he made a lot of money.
That plan, as I see it, is what they are laying out for ‘Tank’ Davis. There is nothing wrong with that. I don’t think that they would put Davis in, at this point, with Garcia because it’s a fight that they are not sure of winning.”
Despite emphasising the slim chance of seeing the fight between the two unbeaten superstars, Arum did go on to predict a clear winner in the bout.
“I like Garcia. It’s hard to say stoppage, but I think Garcia wins decisively. I think he has more talent and he is the naturally bigger guy.”
With a wealth of experience to back him up, it’s easy to see how Arum could be right about the fight being built up over a long period time. Having said that, both fighters do want it – and, sooner or later, that should make it happen.
