The pre-fight discussion regarding the rematch between Tony Bellew and David Haye left boxing fans divided as many still had hopes of a ‘Hayemaker’ victory but ‘The Bomber’ derailed those ideas.
The Liverpudlian’s fifth-round stoppage victory over Haye came as a surprise to many but not for notable boxing trainer Adam Booth.
“It’s hard to see where he can go from here. In my opinion, he should never have been in there anyway, and he shouldn’t even have been in there last year, but he was,” said Booth in an interview with Sky Sports.
Bellew was mostly in control of the whole fight and dropped Haye three times before finishing the job in the fifth. In the past year, Haye had suffered two separate injuries and Booth was unimpressed by the 37-year old’s performance last Saturday night.
“I don’t know how he is physically. But technically he made some big mistakes and let Tony trade with him. You don’t hook with a hooker, if you’re not a hooker, and David is a jab-and-straight-right-hand puncher. He made the wrong choice and paid the ultimate price,” said the trainer.
After the fight, Bellew called out Andre Ward and he’s been also linked other big name fighters such as Tyson Fury.
“He deserves every accolade he gets. I hope he gets a big-money fight next. Whatever it is next, Tony is a draw and whoever is in the other corner, Tony is the draw,” concluded Booth.
As for Haye, his performance against Bellew did not deliver and retirement may be imminent for the former cruiserweight and heavyweight world champion.
