In terms of fighter purses, few would argue that Floyd Mayweather changed the game, and the sport is yet to produce a star who has been able to command purses even close to those generated by ‘Money’ in the 2000s.
Mayweather earned multiple purses in the nine figure range, including a jaw dropping estimated $275 million for his outing against UFC star Conor McGregor.
In a recent interview with FightHype, Shakur Stevenson boldly claimed he will be the fighter to fill Mayweather’s shoes as boxing’s top earner.
“Honestly, this is my passion. I enjoy boxing and I’m not frustrated with anything that’s going on. I know my path and I know where I’m going.
In a few years, I could make 200, 300 million dollars in a fight. People say it will never happen, they say Floyd did that and no one else will do that again. But nobody believed Floyd would be doing that.
I’m focused, I’m excited and I can’t wait to keep putting on these shows and showing the world who I am.”
Aged just 25, Stevenson is already a two weight world champion, having picked up titles at both featherweight and super featherweight in double quick time.
He announced his arrival to the lightweight division in impressive fashion with a dominant performance over Shuichiro Yoshino last month in front of a hometown crowd in Newark, with the bout culminating in referee Allen Huggins waving it off in the sixth round.
Although undoubtedly one of the most talented fighters around, Stevenson probably lacks the profile to match at the time of writing, and will no doubt be keen to land a big money fight against one of the division’s elite names in the not too distant future.
