Roy Jones Jr has weighed in on a potential meeting between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua and, whilst he didn’t count out AJ completely, he’s backing bookmaker’s favourite Fury to come out on top.
Speaking to Pro Boxing Fans, Jones said that although Joshua’s physical gifts give him a chance going into any fight, Fury would have too much upstairs for the Watford man.
“He’s got a chance. Because of his punching power and his athleticism, they’ll always be a factor. So he’s got a chance. But Fury will have too much mentally for him – I think.”
“I think it’s a great fight, and the British fans deserve it. They’re the best fans of boxing, so they deserve it.”
Excitement amongst fans about the prospect of an all-British mega clash between Joshua and Fury has reached fever pitch in recent weeks, buoyed on by confirmation from AJ’s team that that accepted all the terms from team Fury for a meeting on December 3rd.
Recent comments from Fury’s promoter Frank Warren seemed to lend more encouragement to the view the historic fight will finally get sealed soon, as the Queensberry boss confirmed over the weekend that a contract had been sent to Joshua’s representatives.
With past failings to make the fight not forgotten, there will still be a sense of caution amongst some before an official announcement has been made, but without doubt the boxing public is now growing optimistic the generational heavyweight meeting may finally get delivered.
