Last weekend Ohara Davies was on the wrong end of Ismael Barroso’s first-round knockout win, in a bout for the WBA Interim super-lightweight title. Now, ‘Two Tanks’ has told the tale of a unique reason that could have cost him in the fight.
Davies went into the clash as the favourite, despite Barroso’s spirited performance against Rolando Romero last year, and was expected to come through the fight and challenge Romero for the full WBA Super title later in the year.
However, things did not go to the plan for the Londoner, both inside and outside of the ring. On his YouTube Channel, Davies claimed that the casino on the ground floor of his hotel hampered his fight-week preparation.
“This isn’t a conspiracy, this is facts.
“They pump extra oxygen into the atmosphere in the casinos so that people can gamble all day and not be tired, that’s why you see people in there from morning until night, they’re not tired, they don’t need no sleep.
“We had these big air vents in our bedrooms, I was going to bed about 11:30/12:00 at night and I was up at three ‘o’ clock in the morning laying down, I couldn’t sleep.”
Davies went on to explain further, stating that he would have done things differently if given the opportunity again.
“I’d be on my phone scrolling through Instagram and whilst I’m doing that at three in the morning, the other people that were with me, there were about six of us and they were on Instagram too!
“I was thinking ‘what are you doing up at this time?’ and they’re thinking ‘what are you doing up at this time, you’re f***ing fighting’.
“What I should’ve done is realise this earlier, got out of the hotel, booked an AirBnB and stayed in an AirBnB. When I look back, this is one of the biggest mistakes that I have made.”
Barroso is now poised for a second world title challenge, but may be made to wait for Romero to face Ryan Garcia in the coming months.
