Britain has boasted a number of world champions in recent years and another talented fighter may be able to join that crop after it was revealed he could be set for a world title shot in his hometown.
British middleweight champion Nathan Heaney has always dreamt of a world title fight in front of his loyal and vocal fans in Stoke and he appears to be on the verge of achieving that goal after a tremendous four-month spell saw him rise up the world rankings.
Heaney upset the odds back in November when he defeated Denzel Bentley by majority-decision to claim the Lonsdale belt in Manchester and now finds himself ranked in the top fifteen with all four of the sanctioning bodies, positioned as high as fifth with the WBO.
Although, the ‘Hitman’ came close to losing his title earlier this month, after a toe-to-toe barnstormer with Brad Pauls saw his first defence of the belt end in a split draw.
The clash has left fans and Pauls beckoning for a rematch, yet ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez reports that Heaney could be set for a more attractive contest for the WBC middleweight title against Carlos Adames.
“They tell me that the return of Carlos ‘Bronco’ Adames is on the table, tentatively for June 8 against Nathan Heaney. There is no time and it is not official, but at least it is a good option. It is always a pleasure to see Carlos Adames in the ring and Nathan Heaney would be tremendous.”
Jermall Charlo currently reigns as the WBC middleweight champion, but Adames told Fernando Sabatini that he expects to be upgraded from interim title-holder to full champion, as Charlo hasn’t defended the strap since June 2021, ahead of a potential showdown with Heaney in England on June 8th.
“Carlos Adames informs me that he will face Nathan Heaney June 8 in England for the World Cup [Title] @WBCBoxing 160.
SAYS HE WOULD BE PROMOTED
THE WBC has not yet issued anything about it, WILL IT BE?”
The likely venue for the fight will be the bet365 stadium, home of Heaney’s beloved Stoke City Football Club.
