A few weeks ago, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez confirmed that he would be fighting on May 4th, and while an opponent was not, the undisputed super-middleweight champion has now dropped a mammoth clue as to who may appear in the opposing corner.
Canelo initially said that he would face an American, effectively ruling out David Benavidez, Jaime Munguia and David Morrell, despite Benavidez being the WBC interim title-holder and Munguia being number one contender with two of the four sanctioning bodies.
Instead, all paths seemed to lead toward Jermall Charlo, current WBC middleweight champion and twin-brother of unified super-welterweight king, Jermell, who Canelo defeated in his most recent contest.
However, the 33-year-old has recently announced that talks are yet to commence, whilst Alvarez claims a deal is done, indicating that Charlo can also be marked down as a non-runner, assuming both sides are telling the truth.
Of the names linked, that leaves just Terence Crawford, the arguably pound-for-pound number one who would be required to jump up an astonishing three weight-classes for the bout, yet many fans felt that a fight of that magnitude would need a prolonged build-up.
On Instagram, Canelo kept the fans talking by posting a picture of him playing poker in a casino, but instead playing the ‘Omaha Hi’ version, alluding to Crawford’s hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.
‘Bud’ Crawford has been left without a fight after Errol Spence Jr withdrew from their rematch as a result of cataract surgery.
A showdown with Teofimo Lopez appears to have lost any traction, after the WBO super-lightweight champion’s poor display against Jamaine Ortiz earlier in the month.
