Undisputed super-middleweight champion, Saul “Canelo Álvarez” has labelled one fighter as ‘a waste’ in a recent interview.
Canelo has been a world-champion across four different weight-divisions over the course of his career, cementing himself in history as one of the all-time greats of Mexican boxing.
However, a recent dip in form has caused him to lose his position as the current pound-for-pound champion in the majority of fans’ lists.
Alvarez lost his first fight in over eight years when he stepped up to light-heavyweight to fight Dmitry Bivol and then followed that defeat with an underwhelming performance against his ageing rival, Gennady Golovkin, in September.
This has begun speculation that the 32-year-old is now starting to decline, as the effects of sixty-two professional fights begin to show, with even promoter Eddie Hearn admitting that this is a good time to fight Canelo.
Despite last years’ disappointments, Alvarez is still considered one of the poster boys of the sport and still the biggest draw in the boxing.
In an interview with GQ Magazine, Canelo was asked to summarise past and present boxers, and when asked about Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, the Mexican didn’t hold back with his reply.
“A waste.”
Canelo fought and comfortably beat Chavez Jr back in 2017, winning 120-108 on all three scorecards after a heated build-up between the two rivals.
Since then, Canelo’s career has skyrocketed, whilst Chavez Jr’s hasn’t gone to plan, with issues outside of the ring causing more headlines than those in it.
