The re-ignited feud between Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya is showing no signs of dying out, as the Golden Boy President has gunned for his former fighter once again, as we approach four years since their split.
De La Hoya and Canelo have gone back-and-forth several times in the years since Alvarez’s contract was dissolved but their dislike has been brought to centre stage yet again after Canelo’s comments following the press conference ahead of his fight with Jaime Munguia, an event that De La Hoya helped set up.
In an interview with Boxing Social, De Le Hoya labelled Canelo as a ‘jealous’ individual and claimed that although he respects his countryman’s skills as a fighter, he does not respect him as a person.
“As a fighter, I always talk up fighters in the ring, outside of the ring it is a whole different story, right? Everybody talks about me outside of the ring and the s**t that I did back in the past, it is what it is and it is out in the open. Inside of the ring, nobody can criticize me, that is the respect that I deserve.
“Canelo talking all of this s**t? That’s all it is, it is s**t. The fact is that he can’t be around me because the attention is off of him, that is a big thing for him and it f***s with his head. I don’t understand it because he is a great fighter, I respect him as a fighter but I don’t respect him as a person.
“Even Ryan [Garcia] mentioned, Canelo is a jealous guy. He cannot have the attention diverted to somebody else, I understand that.”
Canelo puts his undisputed super-middleweight title on the line against Munguia on May 4th, taking on a fellow Mexican for the first time in seven years.
