Canelo Alvarez has given his reaction to the news that Ryan Garcia failed two drug tests, one before, and one after his recent world title fight with Devin Haney.
Garcia stunned the world and put on the performance of his life on April 20 when he stepped into the ring with former undisputed lightweight world champion turned super-lightweight belt holder Haney.
The build-up to the fight was tumultuous and included some wild antics from Garcia such as admitting to drinking and smoking in camp, claiming he had been cut off from his bank account and phone, arriving with dancers to one press conference and much more.
The state of his mental health was being questioned by many and no one expected him to make the fight, let alone turn up, immediately stun Haney with a lightening fast left hook, then go on to put his opponent down three times on the way to claiming a points victory and handing ‘The Dream’ the first loss of his career.
News broke this week that Garcia, who also missed weight for the fight, had to pay a fine and was ineligible to claim the WBC world title despite the win, now has bigger problems to deal with after ESPN shared a letter that shows ‘King Ry’ tested positive for Ostarine both before and after his historic win
Garcia has since denied all the allegations and claimed he has never cheated, and now his former gym mate and friend ‘Canelo’ has been speaking to Boxing Social about the news.
“We have to wait and see what happens and then we can talk about it. You need to calm down and please let him speak and then we can talk about it. I don’t know what happened with him, I don’t know exactly what is going on and so I don’t have anything to say right now.”
He was asked if the news was a surprise to him.
“I am surprised yes, ’cause I know Ryan and I don’t think he would do it.”
This is the same drug that Amir Khan tested positive for following his knockout loss to Kell Brook in February 2022. He was given a two-year ban by UK Anti-Doping, which might be something Garcia has to face up to should he fail to prove his innocence.
It’s a big blow for Garcia whose stock had risen greatly in the wake of his breakout win. It will be a long and hard road back should he have to stay away from the sport for any great length of time.
