Canelo Alvarez Reportedly Refused PBC Offer To Face David Benavidez In September

It has been reported that the reason Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has split from PBC is because he refused their offer to face David Benavidez In September.

This big breaking news story this week has been rather shrouded in mystery. Many people have been keen for ‘Canelo’ to take on the challenge of the young and talented Benavidez though Canelo himself has never sounded too keen whenever it has been mentioned.

It was rumoured that he was going to instead take a fight with Jermall Charlo having dispatched this brother Jerrell in his last outing last year.

The was the first of a three-fight deal Canlo signed with Al Haymon’s PBC and now per sources at ESPN Mexico the deal has been terminated early.

This leaves Canelo as a free agent as he arranges his next fight for the traditional Cinco de Mayo date and the two names in the frame to be in the opposite corner are Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga.

Mexican star Munguia knocked out previous Canelo victim John Ryder last time out, and Puerto Rican contender Belranaga who also won by knockout this past weekend when he stopped the previously unbeaten Padraig McCrory.

Dan Rafael is now reporting in his newsletter that PBC offered Canelo a fight with Jermall Charlo in May for a guaranteed sum but only if he then signed to fight Benavidez in September, to which he said no.

“Sources with knowledge of the deal said those guarantees were all “for north of $35 million.” But when it came to finalise the May fight, if it was going to be against WBC Middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo, Haymon wanted it a discounted dollar figure.”

It is said in the same post that the offer to fight Benavidez was for $55 million, though Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso has denied that.

As of yet, Canelo still hasn’t announced who or where he will be fighting but fans will be disappointed if it isn’t one of the top names.
