Golden Boy Promotions have officially confirmed that Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvares has tested positive for Clenbuterol, a banned substance that enhances and helps muscle growth, metabolism and breathing.

The promotion released the following statement:
As a part of the voluntary testing program that Canelo Alvarez insisted on ahead of his May 5 fight, one of his results came back positive for trace levels of Clenbuterol, consistent with meat contamination that has impacted dozens of athletes in Mexico over the last years.
As Daniel Eichner, Director of SMRTL, the WADA-accredited lab that concluded the tests stated in his letter today, ‘These values are all within the range of what is expected from meat contamination.’
Alvarez commented on the situation saying that he is surprised about the issue.
“I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me. I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail.”
Canelo will move his training camp from Mexico over to the United States and will take part in any necessary additional VADA testing.
The blockbuster fight against Gennady Golovkin has not been cancelled and will commence as schedulled on May 5 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
ESPN’s boxing journalist Dan Rafael tweeted out VADA’s official letter that informs all the details regarding Canelo’s sample.

The British boxing crowd was not pleased with the news of Canelo’s drug test and some fighters took some verbal jabs at Alvarez.

😳 That dodgy Mexican meat apparently strikes again! 😔
Let me say this; There’s been enough cases of athletes failing dope tests ‘because of contaminated Mexican meat’… so why would u even allow your fighter to consume it?? #CaneloGGG2https://t.co/zmGspSXYHZ
