Their first fight was meant to settle the ongoing debate for pound-for-pound supremacy, but instead, we were left with an even more clouded view of the middleweight picture.
Now we are inching closer day by day, for the rematch the boxing world wants to see. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, the lineal world middleweight champion is edging closer to a second fight against the undefeated WBA, WBC, IBF & IBO unified middleweight kingpin, Gennady Golovkin.
The president of Golden Boy Promotions, Eric Gomez has now shared the deal is all but agreed on Canelo’s part. Only two lingering issues remain on Golovkin’s part but we are now on course for a mega event on the Cinco De Mayo holiday weekend.
“We are close, we are advanced, Canelo wants the fight, he gave us the green light to close the fight and there are important details we’re working on to reach an agreement, once that happens we will work on the contracts,” Gomez said in an interview with ESPN Deportes.
Furthermore, Gomez shared that Alvarez has made known his intention to finalise an agreement to take on Golovkin again.
“The focus is the rematch. That is what Saul wants, what the public wants, we are close. There are details that must be refined, two things that we are working on but we are close.”
Gomez shared that throughout the negotiations, the most important thing to remember was that they abide by their fighters’ wishes.
“We will continue working until we reach an agreement, it is the most important thing for us, what Saul asked us to do, and we are working on those things.”
“We (are) working with the team behind Golovkin, Tom Loeffler is travelling to Germany, he’s speaking with Golovkin and we are only waiting for his answer,” Gomez concluded.
