Having reached an agreement with promoter Golden Boy and broadcaster DAZN, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is now free to resume his professional career as a free agent.
The Mexican star has not fought since he dethroned WBO light-heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev last November, after a targeted May date fell through due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Canelo says that no date has been set for his first bout as a free agent, though he hopes to make an announcement regarding his future in the coming days.
IBF super middleweight Caleb Plant has been touted as a front-runner for a December 19 pay-per-view showdown, with the American publicly declaring that he believes the pair will meet next.
Broadcasters DAZN had previously branded Plant a non-premium opponent, though Canelo’s free agency opens the door for the pair to meet.
“I hope that this week we can have something done, something concrete and be able to announce what day, with whom, where it will be,” Canelo told Rodolfo Vargas.
“I don’t care if it’s December 19 or Christmas, I don’t care, what I want is to fight this year and on any day. For me, when you have to work you have to work and I am willing to sacrifice anything.
“What I want is to make good fights and for people to see great fights, and they are all good fighters. We are going to see which one of them is more comfortable and ready for December.”
