Talk of a fantasy fight between undisputed world champions Terence Crawford and Saul ‘Canelo Alvarez’ has gained traction over the past few weeks, despite the fact there are currently three weight divisions between the pair.
Fresh off his undisputed welterweight championship win over Errol Spence Jr, Crawford stated he would be more than happy to meet Alvarez in the middle and take him on at a catchweight of 158lbs.
However, having campaigned 10lbs higher than that for the last four years, the Mexican has swiftly shot down the idea, and explained to Fight Hub TV that he’ll be willing to face ‘Bud if he comes up to super middleweight.
“I’m 100% focused on this fight [against Jermell Charlo] right now, but everything is possible.
[I’ll fight him at] 168.
But nobody is going to give me credit for that.”
As he alluded to in the quotes above, Alvarez’ focus right now will be 100% on undisputed light middleweight champion Jermell Charlo, who is moving up two weight classes for a shot at the Tapatio’s four belts on September 30th.
A fight between Crawford and Charlo has actually also been heavily touted for down the line, after the latter found time to taunt the onlooking ‘Iron Man’ during his win over Spence.
Unfortunately, with the large gulf in weight appearing to be a dealbreaker and both men not getting any younger, it looks like a fight between ‘Canelo’ and ‘Crawford’ is one that will be fought by fans debating over pub tables and via Twitter posts, rather than in the ring by the two icons.
