Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez has responded to fresh call outs from Terence Crawford.
The Mexican is currently undisputed in the super-middleweight ranks and set to defend those straps against current undisputed super-welterweight champ, Jermell Charlo, who will move up two weights for the fight.
Enter another four-belt champion in Crawford, who recently became the sole belt holder one weight lighter than Charlo. Despite that gulf in pounds and ounces, ‘Bud’ wants to face Canelo should he beat Charlo.
Speaking to Manouk Akopyan, Canelo first said that he finds it strange that people are calling for the fight after saying that even Charlo was too small for him.
“Look, I respect Crawford. He’s a great fighter. I always say that. No disrespect to him, but sometimes it’s a little crazy that people are talking about I’m gonna face a small fighter like Charlo – he’s big – and now they [want me to] face Crawford, who’s smaller than Charlo. That doesn’t make sense.”
The four-belt champion then said, despite the fact that he wouldn’t get credit for beating a naturally lighter man, he would be open to the fight.
“At the end of the day I’m not gonna have credit to face Crawford, no matter what. But you never know in boxing. I go up and down and fight everybody out there, so it’s possible. Why not? It’s possible. If it makes sense, I’m down. Do it. I don’t care who is there. I’m able to fight anybody.”
One man who won’t be fond of the Crawford talk is Charlo, who fully intends to spoil the party on September 30 in Las Vegas. Amongst all the talk of size, fans were recently surprised at how little difference there was when the pair faced off.
